Shirley MacLaine

There was a made-for-tv movie, in the mid 1980’s based on the book, “Out on a Limb”.  I just so happened to be going through my own transformation from a religious based belief system to more of a spiritual understanding of life at this point in time.  The movie was profound for me, and between this beautiful piece based on Shirley MacLaine’s life and several of her books that followed, her wisdom became a foundation for me as I was birthed into my new way of life.

Shirley was born April 24, 1934 at 3:57pm in Richmond, Virginia.  Her Sun is in Taurus, and both her Moon and Ascendant are in Virgo.  Taurus and Virgo are earth signs and therefore show a strongly grounded person.  Both signs are quite successful at creating a good foundation and maneuvering the physical experiences of this material world.  This groundedness has probably served her well in her hollywood life.

Now, both her Sun and her Moon are placed in 2 different water houses.  Water houses are the 3 houses that are normally ruled by the 3 water signs in the natural zodiac.  These are highly sensitive houses and each have a psychic-type of energy to them.

Her Taurus Sun is situated in the 8th house which is normally ruled by the water sign Scorpio.  Taurus, which is slow-moving and takes time to smell-the-roses, is influenced by its opposing sign of Scorpio due to its location in this house.  The 8th house represents the place where we take a deep look at ourselves.  We are willing to take such a deep look, it’s like rip-to-the-bone, let’s feel the pain type of deep.  This is the Scorpion style, yet Taurus is not so interested in taking such a deep look.  With this connection, the Scorpion need to psychoanalyze is now accomplished in a Taurean way.  Because Taurus doesn’t mind spending a lifetime doing whatever it’s inspired to do, this tells us that Shirley naturally has been willing to peel one layer at a time in her search for her own truth.  Taurus brings a patience and perhaps a stubbornness to doing this work.  Perhaps this stubbornness occurred early on in her life around looking deeply at herself.  I can only assume this, as the spiritual teachings that she has shared with the world publicly blossomed in the 1970’s to 1980’s.

One last thing to remember here, is that we are speaking of her Sun.  The Sun represents who we are in the world.    It is the message we are here to share.  It’s an important planet to nourish, as the rest of the planets in our own individual chart depend on the warmth of the Sun.  When we feed it properly, it shines in a way that brings self-esteem and gives us what we need in all aspects of our life and this allows us to live to our full potential.  By doing her 8th house personal transformation and showing this is who she is, Shirley is fulfilling what she came here to do.  The 8th house is actually quite a private house, so even though she has shared with us much of her personal journey, chances are there are many layers in which we are unaware.

Next, let’s look to her 12th house moon.  the 12th house is like a spiritual closet.  It is the part of our selves that is hidden from everyone, and it is the telephone booth to the spirit world.  This is truly where Shirley and each of us for that matter connects to spirit.  Moon represents the way we nurture others, and the way we nurture self.  Shirley’s motherly instincts come through in a non-physical form.  Her ability to care for others comes through her prayers and well-wishes.  It’s like magic.  The thoughts and feelings she holds about a person or a situation, are sent like beams of energy out to the intended receiver.  This is a powerful ability, and used properly, can change worlds.

Now let’s also acknowledge that with the Moon in the 12th, her motherly abilities are not really visible to the rest of the world.  Add the fact that the Moon is in the sign of Virgo, and perhaps this nurturing instinct comes across somewhat militant.  With the 12th house ruled by Virgo, we have a person who likes a spiritual regimen.  This could come out as some form of structured meditation practice, but it also reminds me of “Two Mules for Sister Sara”.  I’m sure when Shirley played a nun in this Clint Eastwood western, she was far more connected to the role of the nun than the world realized.

We’ll move now to her Virgo Ascendant.  The ascendant is how people see us when they first meet us.  Shirley would come across as a well-organized person.  Planning everything from front to back with every “i” dotted and every “t” crossed.  There is a perfection that is a lens through which she sees the world, and the world sees her.  She is a manager, and this shows with how she has managed her life and the successes she has achieved in all of her endeavors.  Judgement… probably harsh at times in her life has been the norm with this sign so strong in her chart.  That said, Virgos are generally well accomplished because they are willing to work triple time to reach their goals.  They are their own harshest critics, and chances are she has learned to soften this with her spiritual practice since this sign also rules her 12th house.

The Ascendant also gives us an idea about the looks of a person.  Her short haircut has probably been for efficiency, as a Virgo needs to streamline everything around her to make life as easy as possible, as there is so much to tend to.  There is also the sassy factor, which wows the crowd for her stage and screen work.  She has figure out how to catch our eye with her simple yet well-groomed style which shows a brilliance in her managerial skills.

With the Virgo and Taurus so strong in Shirley’s chart, she will continue to have energy to produce, and we will probably always see her creativity manifesting something for us to enjoy.  Her ability to re-create herself at different phases, excites me to know that there is probably more surprises on the horizon.
